Happy Father’s Day!
Dads and Grads. This always seems to be the focus of June. Unlike moms who seem to get their own month, dads have to share with the graduates of the year. Coming on the heals of Mother’s Day, which was recognized as a federal holiday in 1914, Washington State celebrated its first Father’s Day on June 19, 1910, but it wasn’t until 1972 that the day became a nationwide holiday. It faced (and still faces) much of the same criticism as Mother’s Day in becoming a retail holiday solely to pad the pocketbooks of retail businesses, but men also argued that dad’s don’t have the same sentimental appeal that mothers have. Regardless of your stance on the subject, let us not lose sight of the sacrifices that fathers across the globe make for their children and I wish them all a Happy Father’s Day!
